Radiometrics Midwest Corporation provides radiated emissions testing for electronic and electrical equipment at our A2LA-accredited EMC laboratory in Illinois.

Radiated emissions testing measures unwanted radio-frequency energy emitted by a product and its associated cables. Testing is commonly required for FCC compliance, European EMC compliance, CISPR/EN requirements, and numerous product-specific EMC standards.

Radiometrics performs radiated emissions testing on products ranging from small electronic devices to larger equipment and systems using test environments appropriate for the applicable standard and product configuration.

Radiated Emissions Testing Capabilities

Our radiated emissions testing capabilities include:

  • FCC Part 15 emissions testing
  • CISPR and EN emissions testing
  • Class A and Class B equipment
  • AC and DC powered equipment
  • Multiple operating modes and configurations
  • Peripheral and support equipment configurations
  • Pre-compliance measurements
  • Emissions troubleshooting and engineering support
  • Testing of larger equipment and systems when required

How Radiated Emissions Testing Is Performed

The equipment under test (EUT) is configured and operated in representative operating modes while radio-frequency emissions are measured using calibrated receiving equipment and antennas.

The applicable standard establishes factors such as measurement frequency range, detector functions, measurement distance, antenna requirements, EUT configuration and emissions limits.

Cables, peripherals and operating modes can significantly affect emissions. Testing therefore considers the product configuration required by the applicable standard and the conditions expected to produce representative or worst-case emissions.

FCC Part 15 Radiated Emissions Testing

Radiometrics performs radiated emissions testing for unintentional radiators and other electronic devices subject to applicable FCC Part 15 requirements.

Testing can be coordinated with additional FCC measurements when required by the equipment type and applicable rule sections.

CISPR / EN Radiated Emissions Testing

Radiometrics performs radiated emissions testing to applicable CISPR and EN standards used for European and international EMC compliance.

Requirements vary according to product type, intended environment and applicable product or product-family standard.

Testing may include standards such as CISPR 11 / EN 55011 for applicable industrial, scientific and medical equipment and CISPR 32 / EN 55032 for multimedia equipment.

Class A and Class B Equipment

Many emissions standards establish different limits depending on the product classification and intended environment.

Class B limits are generally more restrictive than Class A limits. The applicable classification is determined by the requirements of the specific standard and intended product environment.

Radiometrics can assist manufacturers in identifying the appropriate limits when developing the test program.

Pre-Compliance Radiated Emissions Testing

Pre-compliance testing can be particularly valuable during product development.

Measurements performed before a formal compliance program can identify potentially excessive emissions while the design can still be modified efficiently.

Radiometrics can perform focused measurements to identify problematic frequencies, operating modes, cable configurations and other conditions that contribute to emissions.

Radiated Emissions Troubleshooting

When a product exceeds an applicable emissions limit, understanding the source is often more valuable than simply knowing that the product failed.

Radiometrics can work with the manufacturer’s engineering team to investigate potential emission sources and coupling paths.

Depending on the product, troubleshooting may include evaluation of shielding, grounding, cable configuration, filtering, power supplies, clocks, digital circuitry and other potential RF emission sources.

Where practical, corrective changes can be evaluated during testing to determine whether they reduce the measured emissions.

Information Needed for a Radiated Emissions Quote

Please provide the following information when available:

  • Applicable standard or regulatory requirement
  • Product description and model number
  • Product dimensions
  • AC or DC power requirements
  • Number and type of external cables
  • Required peripherals and support equipment
  • Operating modes to be evaluated
  • Class A or Class B classification, if known
  • Highest internally generated or used frequency, when applicable
  • Previous emissions reports or test data, when available

If you are uncertain which emissions standard applies, Radiometrics can review the product information and help identify the likely test requirements.
