Radiometrics Midwest Corporation provides EMC testing for industrial equipment, machinery, controls and electronic systems at our A2LA-accredited EMC laboratory in Illinois.

Industrial products often operate in electrically demanding environments containing motors, drives, switching equipment, contactors, power converters and other potential sources of electromagnetic interference. Radiometrics provides emissions and immunity testing, pre-compliance evaluation and EMC troubleshooting for industrial products ranging from electronic modules to large equipment and systems.

Industrial Equipment EMC Testing

Radiometrics can support EMC testing for products such as:

  • Industrial control equipment
  • Machinery controls
  • Motor drives and controllers
  • Power electronics
  • Industrial instrumentation
  • Sensors and monitoring equipment
  • Process-control equipment
  • Pumps and associated controls
  • HVAC and building-control equipment
  • Industrial communication equipment
  • Power supplies and converters
  • Electronic modules and subsystems
  • Large industrial machines and systems

Testing can be performed on complete products or individual electronic assemblies depending on the applicable standard and customer requirements.

Industrial EMC Emissions Testing

Industrial equipment can generate electromagnetic disturbances from switching power supplies, motor drives, processors, digital circuitry, relays and other electrical systems.

Radiometrics performs applicable radiated and conducted emissions testing for industrial equipment.

Depending on the product and intended market, requirements may include CISPR, EN, FCC and other product-specific or customer EMC standards.

CISPR 11 / EN 55011 Industrial Equipment Testing

CISPR 11 and EN 55011 address radio-frequency disturbance characteristics of industrial, scientific and medical equipment.

Radiometrics performs applicable conducted and radiated emissions measurements for products subject to CISPR 11 / EN 55011 requirements.

The applicable group, class, limits and test configuration depend on the equipment and intended environment.

Industrial EMC Immunity Testing

Industrial equipment may be exposed to electromagnetic disturbances through the enclosure, power connections, signal lines and control interfaces.

Depending on the applicable product standard, immunity testing can include:

  • IEC 61000-4-2 electrostatic discharge
  • IEC 61000-4-3 radiated RF immunity
  • IEC 61000-4-4 electrical fast transient/burst
  • IEC 61000-4-5 surge immunity
  • IEC 61000-4-6 conducted RF immunity
  • IEC 61000-4-8 power-frequency magnetic field immunity
  • IEC 61000-4-11 voltage dips and interruptions

Detailed information about these test methods is available on our IEC 61000-4 EMC Immunity Testing page.

Radiometrics can coordinate emissions and immunity testing as part of an integrated industrial EMC program.

IEC 61000-6 Generic Industrial EMC Standards

When a dedicated product-family EMC standard is not applicable, industrial equipment may be evaluated using applicable IEC or EN 61000-6 generic EMC standards.

These standards address emissions and immunity requirements for equipment intended for industrial and other electromagnetic environments.

Radiometrics can review the product, intended environment and applicable requirements with the manufacturer before testing begins.

Large Industrial Equipment EMC Testing

Radiometrics’ large 10-meter semi-anechoic chamber allows many industrial systems and machines to be tested in configurations that cannot readily be accommodated by smaller EMC laboratories.

The chamber includes a 20-foot-diameter turntable with a load capacity exceeding 25,000 pounds and an equipment entrance approximately 20 feet wide by 16 feet high.

For unusually large equipment, Radiometrics can review dimensions, weight, power requirements, support equipment and operating configuration before shipment.

Industrial Electrical Transient Testing

Industrial equipment connected to AC or DC power systems can be exposed to switching transients, surges and other electrical disturbances.

Radiometrics performs applicable electrical transient and immunity testing using the coupling methods, test levels and configurations required by the applicable standard.

Pre-Compliance Industrial EMC Testing

Pre-compliance testing can identify EMC problems while an industrial product is still under development.

Focused measurements can be used to evaluate:

  • Enclosure shielding
  • Cable routing and configuration
  • Grounding and bonding
  • Power-input filtering
  • Interface filtering
  • Motor and drive interference
  • Switching power supplies
  • Digital circuitry
  • Equipment operating modes

Design changes can often be evaluated during testing before the product enters formal compliance testing.

Industrial EMC Troubleshooting

When equipment fails an emissions or immunity requirement, Radiometrics engineers can work with the manufacturer’s engineering team to identify potential sources and coupling paths.

Our multiple EMC test environments allow troubleshooting to be performed on electronic components, subsystems and many complete industrial machines.

Custom and Manufacturer EMC Specifications

Industrial manufacturers and their customers may specify EMC requirements beyond published CISPR, IEC or EN standards.

Radiometrics can review customer specifications and develop a test program around required methods, frequencies, test levels, operating modes and performance criteria.

Developmental and engineering testing can also be performed when a standard test method does not completely address the equipment or engineering objective.

Information Needed for an Industrial EMC Quote

Please provide the following information when available:

  • Product or equipment description
  • Applicable EMC standard or customer specification
  • Equipment dimensions and weight
  • AC or DC power requirements
  • Single-phase or three-phase power requirements
  • External cables and interfaces
  • Required operating modes
