How Conducted Emissions Testing Is Performed
The equipment under test (EUT) is operated in representative modes while radio-frequency disturbances present on applicable connections are measured.
Depending on the standard and connection being evaluated, appropriate measurement networks, receivers and other test equipment are used to provide the specified measurement conditions.
The applicable standard establishes the frequency range, detector functions, limits, measurement configuration and ports that require evaluation.
AC Mains Conducted Emissions
AC mains conducted emissions testing evaluates RF disturbances coupled from the equipment onto its AC power connection.
Power supplies, switching circuitry and other internal electronic functions can generate RF energy that reaches the power line and may exceed the applicable conducted emissions limits.
Testing is performed using the measurement methods and limits required by the applicable regulatory or product standard.
DC Power and Other Wired Ports
Some standards require emissions measurements on DC power connections or other applicable wired ports in addition to AC mains measurements.
The required measurements depend on the product configuration, cable type, intended use and applicable standard.
Radiometrics can review the product’s external connections to help determine which ports require evaluation.
CISPR / EN Conducted Emissions Testing
Conducted emissions requirements are included in numerous CISPR and corresponding EN standards.
Radiometrics performs conducted emissions testing for applicable European and international requirements, including CISPR 11 / EN 55011 and CISPR 32 / EN 55032 where applicable to the product.
FCC Conducted Emissions Testing
Applicable FCC Part 15 requirements may include measurements of radio-frequency disturbances conducted onto AC power lines.
Radiometrics can coordinate conducted and radiated emissions measurements as part of an FCC compliance or pre-compliance test program.
Pre-Compliance Conducted Emissions Testing
Pre-compliance measurements can identify conducted emissions problems before formal compliance testing.
This can be particularly valuable during development of switching power supplies, power converters, digital electronics and other products that can generate significant RF disturbances on power or interface connections.
Conducted Emissions Troubleshooting
When conducted emissions exceed an applicable limit, Radiometrics can work with the manufacturer’s engineering team to help identify the frequencies, operating conditions and circuits associated with the problem.
Troubleshooting may include evaluation of power-input filtering, switching power supplies, grounding, common-mode currents, cable configuration and other potential coupling paths.
Where practical, corrective changes can be evaluated during testing to determine whether they reduce the measured emissions.
