IEC 61000-4-6 Conducted RF Immunity Testing

Radiometrics Midwest Corporation provides IEC 61000-4-6 conducted RF immunity testing for electronic and electrical equipment at our A2LA-accredited EMC laboratory in Romeoville, Illinois.

IEC 61000-4-6 evaluates the immunity of equipment to radio-frequency disturbances coupled onto power, signal, control, and communication cables. These conducted RF disturbances can be produced by radio transmitters and other RF sources and may enter equipment through connected cables and wiring.

Radiometrics performs conducted RF immunity testing using calibrated RF test systems and coupling methods appropriate for the equipment, cable configuration, applicable product standard, and customer test specification.

What Does IEC 61000-4-6 Testing Evaluate?

During IEC 61000-4-6 testing, controlled RF disturbances are coupled onto applicable cables while the equipment under test (EUT) is operating and being monitored.

The RF signal is swept through the required frequency range at the test level, modulation, frequency step, and dwell time specified by the applicable standard or test plan. The appropriate coupling or injection method is selected based on the type of cable and equipment configuration.

During RF exposure, the EUT is monitored for unintended operation, loss of function, communication errors, measurement errors, resets, or other performance changes that may affect its ability to meet the required performance criteria.

Radiometrics IEC 61000-4-6 Testing Capabilities

Radiometrics performs IEC 61000-4-6 conducted RF immunity testing on a wide range of electronic and electrical equipment. Testing can be configured for applicable power, signal, control, and communication connections in accordance with the product standard or customer test plan.

Our conducted RF immunity capabilities include:

  • Testing of applicable AC and DC power connections
  • Testing of signal, control, and communication cables
  • Calibrated RF injection and coupling methods
  • Controlled frequency stepping and dwell times
  • Operation and monitoring of the EUT during RF exposure
  • Testing at levels specified by applicable product standards or customer specifications
  • Evaluation of multiple operating modes when required
  • Engineering assistance when RF susceptibility is observed

Planning an IEC 61000-4-6 Test Program

The configuration and duration of IEC 61000-4-6 testing depend on the applicable standard, the number and types of cables connected to the equipment, required test levels, operating modes, and equipment monitoring requirements.

Because RF disturbances may need to be applied separately to multiple power, signal, control, or communication connections, identifying all applicable cables before testing is important for developing an accurate test plan and quotation.

Radiometrics can review the equipment configuration and applicable requirements before testing to determine which connections require evaluation and the appropriate coupling methods.

Information Needed for an IEC 61000-4-6 Quote

To help us develop an accurate conducted RF immunity test program and quotation, please provide the following information when available:

  • Applicable product standard or customer test specification
  • Product description and model number
  • AC or DC power requirements
  • Number and type of power, signal, control, and communication cables
  • Cable lengths and shielding, when applicable
  • Required peripherals and support equipment
  • Operating modes to be evaluated
  • Required test levels, if known
  • Method used to monitor equipment performance during testing

Conducted RF Immunity Troubleshooting

If a product experiences a performance problem during conducted RF immunity testing, Radiometrics can work with your engineering team to help determine which connection or frequency range is associated with the susceptibility.

Where practical, corrective changes can be evaluated during the test program to determine whether they improve the equipment’s conducted RF immunity before final testing is completed.
