Radiometrics Midwest Corporation provides EMC testing for agricultural, construction, earth-moving and other off-highway equipment at our A2LA-accredited EMC laboratory in Illinois.
Our large 10-meter semi-anechoic chamber allows Radiometrics to evaluate many complete machines and large equipment assemblies that cannot readily be accommodated by conventional EMC laboratories. Testing can also be performed on electronic modules, controllers, sensors and other individual components.
Agricultural Equipment EMC Testing
Modern agricultural machinery incorporates increasingly complex electronic systems, including engine and transmission controls, GPS and guidance systems, displays, sensors, communications, power electronics and electronically controlled hydraulic systems.
Radiometrics can provide EMC testing for equipment such as:
- Tractors
- Combines and harvesters
- Sprayers
- Agricultural implements
- Forestry machinery
- Electronic control systems
- Sensors and monitoring equipment
- Displays and operator controls
- Electrically powered agricultural equipment
- Electronic modules and components
Testing can be performed at the complete-machine, system or component level depending on the applicable standard and customer requirements.
Construction and Earth-Moving Equipment EMC Testing
Construction and earth-moving equipment presents unusual EMC testing challenges because of machine size, weight, electrical power requirements and operating configuration.
Radiometrics can accommodate many types of equipment, including:
- Excavators
- Wheel loaders
- Skid-steer loaders
- Dozers
- Backhoes
- Material-handling equipment
- Utility and service equipment
- Mobile industrial machinery
- Electronic control modules
- Sensors and electronic subsystems
Our large test environment allows many machines to be evaluated in a representative configuration rather than limiting the EMC program to individual components.
Complete-Machine EMC Testing
A significant Radiometrics capability is EMC testing at the complete-machine level.
Our 10-meter chamber incorporates a 20-foot-diameter turntable with a load capacity exceeding 25,000 pounds. Chamber access is approximately 20 feet wide by 16 feet high, allowing many large agricultural and construction machines to be brought directly into the controlled EMC test environment.
The facility also includes ventilation and exhaust-handling capability for vehicles and other large equipment requiring operation during testing.
Because equipment dimensions, weight and operating requirements vary considerably, Radiometrics can review large test items before shipment to confirm chamber access and test configuration.
ISO 14982 Agricultural and Forestry Machinery EMC Testing
The ISO 14982 series addresses electromagnetic compatibility requirements for agricultural and forestry machinery.
Radiometrics can perform applicable emissions and immunity testing for agricultural and forestry equipment and associated electronic systems.
The required test program depends on the machine, electronic functions, electrical system and applicable edition or customer specification.
ISO 13766 Earth-Moving and Construction Machinery EMC Testing
The ISO 13766 series addresses electromagnetic compatibility requirements for earth-moving machinery and associated electrical and electronic components.
Radiometrics can perform applicable emissions and immunity evaluations for construction and earth-moving equipment at the machine or component level.
EMC Testing Capabilities
Depending on the applicable standard or manufacturer specification, testing can include:
- Radiated emissions
- Conducted emissions
- Radiated RF immunity
- Conducted RF immunity
- Electrostatic discharge
- Electrical transient immunity
- Conducted transient emissions
- Magnetic-field immunity
- Pre-compliance evaluation
- EMC troubleshooting and engineering support
Electronic Components and Control Systems
Complete-machine testing is only part of an EMC qualification program.
Radiometrics also evaluates electronic components and subsystems used in agricultural and construction equipment, including:
- Electronic control units
- Engine and transmission controllers
- Displays
- Sensors
- Power electronics
- Communication equipment
- Operator controls
- Wiring-related systems
- Electronic subassemblies
Component testing can support product development, supplier qualification and integration into the completed machine.
Manufacturer and Customer EMC Specifications
Agricultural and construction-equipment manufacturers frequently maintain company-specific EMC specifications in addition to ISO and other published standards.
Radiometrics can review manufacturer or customer specifications and develop a test program around the required methods, test levels, equipment configurations and performance criteria.
Custom or developmental testing can also be performed when a published standard does not completely address the equipment or engineering objective.
Electric and Hybrid Equipment
Electrification of agricultural and construction machinery introduces additional EMC considerations involving motor drives, inverters, converters, battery-management systems, charging systems, high-current switching and electronic controls.
Radiometrics can support EMC evaluation of electric and hybrid machines as well as their individual electronic and power-electronic systems.
Pre-Compliance Testing and Troubleshooting
Large-machine EMC failures can be particularly costly when they are discovered late in a development program.
Pre-compliance testing can identify potential emissions or immunity problems before formal qualification.
If a problem is identified, Radiometrics engineers can work with the manufacturer’s engineering team to investigate potential sources and coupling paths.
Where practical, corrective changes can be evaluated while the equipment remains installed in the test environment.

Why Radiometrics for Agricultural and Construction Equipment EMC Testing?
Many EMC laboratories are designed primarily for electronic components and relatively small products.
Radiometrics combines component-level EMC capability with a large 10-meter test chamber capable of accommodating many complete agricultural, construction and off-highway machines.
Additional vehicle and heavy-equipment capabilities are described on our Automotive, Agricultural & Heavy Equipment EMC Testing page.
This allows manufacturers to work with the same laboratory for component development, pre-compliance evaluation, complete-machine testing and EMC troubleshooting.
