Radiometrics Midwest Corporation provides automotive, agricultural, construction and heavy-equipment EMC testing for complete vehicles, large equipment, electronic modules and components at our A2LA-accredited EMC laboratory in Illinois.
Our large 10-meter semi-anechoic chamber was designed to accommodate equipment that many EMC laboratories cannot readily test. The facility supports vehicle-level and large-equipment EMC testing as well as component-level evaluation, pre-compliance testing and troubleshooting.
A key Radiometrics capability is testing equipment at the complete-vehicle or complete-machine level. Our large chamber can accommodate many test items that would otherwise need to be evaluated only at the component level or through more complicated test arrangements.
Complete Vehicle and Large Equipment EMC Testing
Radiometrics’ large EMC chamber includes a 20-foot-diameter turntable with a load capacity exceeding 25,000 pounds. The equipment entrance is approximately 20 feet wide by 16 feet high, allowing the chamber to accommodate many complete vehicles and large machines.
The turntable allows the test item to be rotated while measurement antennas remain in a controlled position, providing an efficient and repeatable approach to vehicle-level radiated EMC measurements.
The chamber also incorporates high-capacity ventilation and exhaust handling for vehicles and other large heat-generating equipment.
Automotive EMC Testing
Radiometrics performs EMC testing for complete vehicles, vehicle electronic systems, modules and components.
Testing can include:
- Vehicle-level radiated emissions
- Vehicle-level RF immunity
- Component-level radiated emissions
- Component-level RF immunity
- Conducted immunity
- Electrical transient immunity
- Conducted transient emissions
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
- Pre-compliance testing
- EMC troubleshooting and engineering support
Agricultural Equipment EMC Testing
Modern agricultural equipment incorporates extensive electronic controls, sensors, communication systems, displays, power electronics and electrically controlled hydraulic and mechanical systems.
Radiometrics can accommodate many types of agricultural equipment, including:
- Tractors
- Combines and harvesters
- Agricultural implements
- Sprayers
- Electronic control systems
- Agricultural vehicle modules and components
- Electrically powered and electronically controlled equipment
Testing can be performed at the complete-machine, system or component level depending on the applicable specification and customer requirements.
Construction and Off-Highway Equipment EMC Testing
Construction and off-highway machinery can present unusual EMC testing challenges because of equipment size, weight, power requirements and operating configuration.
Radiometrics’ large chamber and heavy-duty turntable allow us to evaluate many types of construction and mobile equipment that cannot easily be accommodated by smaller EMC laboratories.
Applications can include:
- Excavators
- Loaders
- Construction machinery
- Utility equipment
- Material-handling equipment
- Mobile industrial equipment
- Electronic control modules and subsystems
Heavy-Duty Truck and Bus EMC Testing
Radiometrics’ large vehicle-level facility can accommodate many heavy-duty trucks, buses and commercial vehicles.
Our experience with large equipment allows EMC programs to be developed around realistic vehicle configurations, operating modes and customer requirements.
Applicable testing can include vehicle emissions, immunity, electrical transients, ESD and component-level EMC evaluation.
Electric and Hybrid Vehicles and Equipment
Electrification introduces additional EMC considerations involving high-power switching electronics, motor drives, converters, charging systems, battery electronics, communication networks and electronic controls.
Radiometrics can support EMC evaluation of electric and hybrid vehicles, agricultural machinery, construction equipment and associated electronic systems.
Pre-compliance measurements can be particularly valuable during development because EMC issues can be investigated before the final machine or vehicle configuration is released.
CISPR Automotive and Vehicle EMC Testing
Radiometrics performs applicable CISPR vehicle and component EMC testing, including:
- CISPR 12 — Vehicle radiated emissions
- CISPR 25 — Vehicle component RF emissions
The applicable standard and test configuration depend on whether the test item is a complete vehicle, machine, component or electronic subsystem.
SAE Automotive and Heavy-Duty EMC Testing
Radiometrics supports applicable SAE EMC test methods, including:
- SAE J551-2 — Vehicle RF radiated emissions
- SAE J551-11 — Vehicle-level RF immunity
- SAE J1113-2 — Conducted immunity, power leads
- SAE J1113-3 — Conducted immunity, power injection
- SAE J1113-4 — Bulk current injection
- SAE J1113-11 — Vehicle immunity to transients
- SAE J1113-12 — Conducted immunity by coupling methods
- SAE J1113-13 — Electrostatic discharge
- SAE J1113-21 — Vehicle component-level RF immunity
- SAE J1113-22 — Radiated magnetic-field immunity
- SAE J1113-23 — Stripline radiated immunity
- SAE J1113-26 — AC power-line electric-field immunity
- SAE J1113-41 — Vehicle component RF emissions
- SAE J1113-42 — Conducted transient emissions
- SAE J1455 — Environmental practices for electronic equipment used in heavy-duty vehicle applications
ISO Automotive and Machinery EMC Testing
Radiometrics supports applicable ISO EMC requirements, including:
- ISO 11451-2 — Vehicle-level RF immunity
- ISO 11452-2 — Vehicle component-level RF immunity
- ISO 7637-2 — Electrical transient immunity
- ISO 10605 — Electrostatic discharge
- ISO 13766 — EMC requirements for earth-moving and construction machinery
- ISO 14982 series — EMC requirements for agricultural and forestry machinery
The appropriate test methods depend on the equipment type, configuration, electrical system and applicable product specification.
UNECE Vehicle EMC Testing
UNECE Regulation No. 10 establishes electromagnetic compatibility requirements associated with applicable vehicles and vehicle components.
Radiometrics can perform applicable EMC measurements and work with manufacturers to develop the required test program for products subject to UNECE vehicle EMC requirements.
Component and Electronic Module EMC Testing
Not every automotive or heavy-equipment project requires a complete vehicle.
Radiometrics also performs EMC testing on:
- Electronic control units
- Sensors
- Controllers
- Displays
- Power electronics
- Vehicle modules
- Wiring-related systems
- Electronic subassemblies
Component-level testing can support design development, supplier qualification and integration into the final vehicle or machine.
Pre-Compliance Testing and EMC Troubleshooting
Finding an EMC problem before formal qualification can reduce redesign costs and project delays.
Radiometrics can perform pre-compliance measurements and focused engineering evaluations to identify emissions or immunity problems during product development.
If a failure occurs, our engineers can work with the manufacturer’s engineering team to characterize the problem and evaluate potential corrective changes.
For large equipment, the ability to troubleshoot while the machine remains installed in the test environment can be particularly valuable.
Custom and Manufacturer EMC Specifications
Automotive, agricultural and construction-equipment manufacturers frequently use company-specific EMC requirements in addition to published SAE, ISO and CISPR standards.
Radiometrics can review customer or manufacturer specifications and develop a test program around the required methods, levels, configurations and operating conditions.
Special or developmental EMC testing can also be performed when an established standard does not fully address the equipment or engineering objective.
